The federal government has released its official list of grocers that have pulled ground beef as part of a current illness-related recall.
So far, Aldi is the only grocery store chain to pull meat from Cargill Meat Solutions as the investigation continues into an E. coli outbreak. Target, meanwhile, has also pulled Cargill meat from its shelves. Other local retailers, including Country Mart, Good’s Cash Saver and Walmart, were not affected by the recall.
Cargill pulled more than 130,000 pounds of ground beef. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says one person has died and nearly 20 people have gotten sick from E. coli since July.
E. coli can lead to diarrhea and vomiting as well as dehydration or even kidney failure. The federal government says E. coli can be avoided by cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Proper hand-washing is also needed when handling raw meat, poultry and eggs.
