Renowned dance troupe Momix elevated imagery and dance Wednesday night to take residents on an unforgettable journey with their production Opus Cactus.
The world-famous contemporary dance troupe based out of Washington Connecticut opened the 2018-19 Emporia Arts Center’s Performing Arts Series at Albert Taylor Hall. The company combines acrobatics, dance, gymnastics, mime, props and film in a theatrical setting.
The group was founded in 1981 by choreographer Moses Pendleton. Momix member Jason Williams says many of their performances are born out of ideas from Pendleton’s experiences in his surroundings.
Once the initial idea is presented, the group of dancers collaborate together to create a full show, which Williams says can take upwards of 6 months to a year before it is ready to premiere.
When asked what the troupe’s mission is with their performances, Williams says they simply want to pull an audience into their world.
Before Wednesday evening’s performance, Momix held an afternoon show for local students. Williams says he loves performing for children, as their imagination allows them to perceive the performance in ways others can’t.
