The extremely tight labor market continues across Kansas and the KVOE listening area.
Statewide, the Department of Labor is reporting a 3.3 percent unemployment rate in August — down from 3.4 percent in July and 3.6 percent in August 2017.
Labor Department economist Emilie Doerksen:
Nonfarm jobs increased by 3,600 from July, with private sector jobs up by 300.
Here in the KVOE listening area, Emporia’s August jobless rate stands at 3.5 percent, down from 4.3 percent in July and 4.1 percent in August 2017. Lyon County’s jobless rate is 3.6 percent, down from 4.3 percent in July and 4.1 percent in August 2017.
Areawide, all counties saw declines in their monthly unemployment rates except for Morris County, which went from 3.1 percent to 3.3 percent. Chase County has the area’s lowest unemployment at 2.9 percent. Coffey County has the highest at 5.4 percent, but it also had the largest monthly decline at 1.3 percent.
