The Emporia State soccer team defeated Fort Hays State 3-2 in their MIAA opener Sunday.
Daniela Cardona scored the first goal for the Lady Hornets on a shot from 30 yards out to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead at halftime. Fort Hays State would score 2 goals 37 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute of play. Tanna Benefiel scored on a header to tie the match in the 63rd minute of play. Rachel Marshall scored on a header in the 75th minute of play to give Emporia State the lead.
Emporia State had the advantage of 21 shots to 5 and had 6 shots on goal to 4 for Fort Hays. The Lady Hornets are now 6-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in MIAA play. They go to Missouri Western on Friday.
