The Lindenwood Lions out scored the Emporia State football team 48-41 Saturday afternoon.
Emporia State struck first scoring on their first drive, Landon Nault catching a screen pass from Braxton Marstall and took it in from 3 yards out. Landon Nault added a 2 yard run to give the Hornets a 13-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. Lindenwood scored the first touchdown of the 2nd half an 8 yard run by Nash Sutherlin who finished with 166 rushing yards. Braxton Marstall scored on a 1 yard run to give the Hornets a 20-7 lead. Lindenwood scored 2 touchdowns in the final 6:26 to take a 21-20 lead at halftime. Lindenwood would score 2 more touchdowns to take a 34-20 lead in the 3rd quarter. Landon Nault scored his 2nd rushing and 3 touchdown of the day on a 2 yard run to cut the deficit to 34-27.
Lindenwood would score 2 more touchdowns to take a 48-27 lead. Lindenwood was led by quarterback Cade Brister who threw for 308 yards and 5 touchdowns. Tightend Erik Henneman caught 9 passes for 147 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Emporia State tried to rally scoring a touchdown with 8:03 to play on a Braxton Marstall 6 yard run. With 44 seconds to play Tyler Harris caught a 7 yard pass from Marstall to make it 48-41. Marstall finished with a career high 40 completions on 60 attempts for 404 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also scored 2 rushing touchdowns.
Jace McDown led the Hornet defense with 13 tackles.
Emporia State Coach Garin Higgins said they did not get the job done defensively.
With the loss the Hornets are now 2-2 for the season. Lindenwood improves to 2-2.
Emporia State plays at Northwest Missouri State next Saturday with kick-off at 1:30p in Maryville, Missouri.
