Folks in the town of LeRoy got waterlogged in a hurry Friday.
Folks in the southeast Coffey County town picked up three inches of rain in two hours or less, and that was enough to force city officials to close several streets, including C Street near LeRoy Elementary and Southern Coffey County High School, as well as Kansas Highway 58.
The school district has a four-day week, and under normal circumstances the schools would not be in class. However, Labor Day earlier this week meant a Friday class schedule — and Superintendent Russ Mildward tells KVOE News the areas surrounding the schools are soaked.
If there’s any good news, it does not appear water got into either building. However, the district has postponed Friday’s football game against Hartford. With this being Homecoming weekend, the district had to make other adjustments.
Mildward says LeRoy received anywhere from 2-5 inches of rain earlier this week, so Friday’s rain had nowhere to go.
Most streets have reopened, according to Street Supervisor Aaron Copeland. Damage estimates are pending.
Areawide, rain chances come to an end by midday Saturday. We’ll keep you updated on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
