To commemorate 50 years since the escalation of the Vietnam conflict, the Emporia Public Library is hoping to hear firsthand from local veterans who lived through it.
With the help of a grant from Humanities Kansas, the library is participating in a project called Kansas Stories of the Vietnam War to collect oral histories. Library Director Robin Newell says they will be looking for veterans to share what they remember about serving during the war.
While particularly interested in stories from veterans, Newell says they are also glad to have stories from spouses and family members on the other side. The stories that are collected, Newell says will be turned over to the Library of Congress’ veteran history project.
Those interested can go through the interview process by contacting Public Services Librarian Molly Chenault at 620-340-6351. The Remembering Vietnam in Emporia reception and discussion is from 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 29 at the American Legion.
