The playing career of Emporia State defensive back Marquise Johnson has likely come to an end.
Johnson, 21, from Independence, was shot while in a car in downtown Emporia on Aug. 16 and taken by private vehicle to Newman Regional Health. He was subsequently transferred to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he remains at last word.
Hospital officials say they cannot confirm Johnson’s condition, and Emporia State’s Department of Athletics has also said it cannot confirm Johnson’s status. However, KVOE News was directed to Johnson’s GoFundMe page online, Marquise Johnson Medical Funds, for an accurate status report. The page says Johnson’s left leg was amputated below the knee.
Emporia Police are continuing their investigation. No arrests or charges have been announced.
Johnson’s online fundraising page has already surpassed goal of $4,500 after it was organized over the past week.
