Melvern residents can now drink their water without taking precautionary measures.
The town was the last purchasing system to be cleared from a boil water advisory impacting Public Wholesale Water Supply District No. 12 and several other towns and rural water districts, with affected towns including Lebo, Lyndon, Pomona, Quenemo and Waverly. Four rural water districts in Coffey and Osage counties were also involved this week.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment cleared Melvern after lab samples showed no evidence of contamination after the supply district was affected by a line break early Monday and Melvern had a “positive biological sample” this week. A loss of water pressure developed, which leads to a possible drop in chlorine residuals and an increased risk for bacterial contamination.
The nature of that biological sample at Melvern has not been revealed.
