USD 251 North Lyon County held a special meeting Thursday where the 2018-19 budget was formally approved.
This year’s total budget authority is just over $10.4 million with a mill rate of 40.499, down slightly from the year before. New USD 251 Superintendent Mike Mathes praised the work of the district to get 5 percent raises to staff.
Earlier this year the district made the tough decision to close Reading Elementary in a cost-saving measure that saved the district more than $200,000. Mathes says now the question becomes what happens with that building as well as other facilities needs in the district.
Some of the immediate priorities facing the district include portable buildings at the high school that either need to be expanded or replaced. Mathes says they also need to replace the elementary school doors with more secure electronic entrances and exits in the building.
Thursday was also the first day of classes for students in the district.
