Just a few Lyon County roads are closed after heavy rain Thursday.
Road J between 140 and 150, 150 between J and Kansas Highway 99 and 240 between D and E-5 have re-opened. However, the following roads are still closed:
*Road 150 from D to F and at P
*Road 160 at R
*Road E north of 150
It’s the first time in almost a year that some Lyon County roads have been closed due to flooding. Heavy rain near Emporia on Aug. 21 last year closed a handful of roads south of town for several days before conditions dried up and Road and Bridge crews could fix the gravel roads.
Rain chances return next week, but the short-term weather issue is heat and humidity. Here’s TV-13 meteorologist Jeremy Goodwin:
6 am Friday: Small list of road closures remains in effect for Friday morning
A handful of Lyon County roads remain closed after hefty rains Thursday morning.
Rainfall totals of anywhere from 1.5 to 3-plus inches were commonplace in and around Emporia as several waves of storms pushed across the area.
Latest totals:
*Antler Ridge: 2 inches
*Tenth and Weaver: 2 inches
*Allen: 2.5-4 inches
*Council Grove: 3.35 inches
That rainfall closed the following roads as of late Thursday afternoon:
*Road J between Roads 140 and 150
*Road 150 between Road J and Kansas Highway 99
*Road 240 between Roads D and E-5
Other roads were closed after normal business hours:
*Road 150 from D to F and at P
*Road 160 at R
*Road E north of 150
At this time, it’s unclear when those roads will be reopened to traffic. Drivers are told to never drive into flooded areas, turn off cruise control on wet roads, leave extra room between vehicles and avoid hard braking or turning sharply.
