Approvals were the name of the game at the Emporia School Board meeting Wednesday night.
The board approved the 2018-19 budget as part of its agenda. The total budget authority is slightly over $31.3 million with an estimated mill levy at 53.863 mills, essentially unchanged since 2010. Assistant Superintendent for Business Operations Rob Scheib says action by lawmakers and the Kansas Supreme Court led to another $1.1 million in base state aid per student and another $300,000 for special education. That money has let the district enhance education for students and better compensate employees in the process.
The board also:
*Approved a memorandum of understanding with CrossWinds Counseling and Management for wellness services as well as a separate memorandum of agreement with Flint Hills Technical College for concurrent enrollment.
*Approved McCownGordon Construction of Manhattan as the district’s construction manager-at risk firm with the district’s facility needs assessment process ongoing.
*Encouraged people interested in filling the district’s open board position to submit applications by noon Aug. 29. The board has a special meeting Sept. 5 to consider applications after Mike Helbert’s resignation earlier this summer.
