You would think rain totals of 3-7 inches over a 36-hour period would be enough to shrink the exceptional drought affecting northern Lyon, eastern Morris and much of Wabaunsee counties.
Unfortunately, the worst level of drought on the US Drought Monitor scale actually expanded to the northeast and now covers much of Shawnee County. Extreme drought, the next most severe level of drought, also expanded and now covers the northern half of the KVOE listening area. Severe and moderate drought covers the southern half.
Some drought relief is expected with next week’s report, and a lot of that has to do with the timing of the rainfall earlier this week. The heaviest rain fell Tuesday morning, after the reporting period for Thursday’s update ended.
