One local church continues to make sure back to school time doesn’t break the bank for local families.
For the second year in a row, Emporia First United Methodist Church has fitted all students in Emporia with the school supplies they need. It was the third year for the churches school supply drive and church spokesperson Dana Roemer explains why it’s something the church feels so strongly about.
The supplies were distributed July 28 to all USD 253 schools as well as Emporia Christian and Sacred Heart Schools with volunteers taking the various items to each building. Donations from community partners including the Jones Trust, Hopkins Foundation, Capitol Federal Savings Bank, Grace United Methodist Church made the donations possible in addition to help from local businesses and community members.
Elementary student supplies were collected by grade level, while at the middle school level they were delivered to teachers on different teams. At the high school level, each student will receive a bag containing the supplies they need on the first day of classes.
