One person was injured following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon near 8th and Merchant Street in Emporia.
According to Emporia Police Officer Sinjin Andrews, shortly before 1 p.m. the driver of an eastbound passenger car reportedly didn’t see a northbound passenger car and the two collided in the intersection. The impact caused the northbound vehicle to spin out. The driver was transported by Lyon County ambulance to Newman Regional Health with unknown injuries. Her name has not been released.
The crash remains under further investigation by the Emporia Police Department.
Meanwhile, wet highway conditions apparently contributed to several wrecks Tuesday. Several involving either area residents or highways were listed as injury accidents but did not lead to hospital trips afterward:
*Around 9:30 am, 27-year-old Jason Jones of Emporia crashed on the Kansas Turnpike about 12 miles southwest of Topeka. Jones was northbound when he lost control. His car went into a ditch, hit a culvert and overturned.
*Shortly after 6:30 am, a car crashed in almost the exact same spot. 27-year-old Kayla Lanzrath of Allen, listed on the Highway Patrol crash log as both pedestrian and driver, declined anything beyond on-site treatment. The online report says the car hydroplaned and the driver hit an embankment.
*Around noon, another hydroplaning incident led to a crash on the Turnpike 17 miles southwest of Emporia and just south of the Flint Hills cattle pens exit. 22-year-old Jennifer Jackson of Topeka suffered possible injuries, but the Turnpike Authority crash log does not list her as going to a hospital afterward.
*Around 1 pm, a vehicle crashed and rolled several times on the Turnpike about 20 miles southwest of Emporia after hydroplaning. Four Oklahoma residents suffered possible injuries but declined transport.
*Also Tuesday, Chase County deputies responded to a hydroplane crash on US Highway 50 just east of Strong City. Sheriff Richard Dorneker says a vehicle went off the highway into a nearby ditch, but the driver continued on her way after the car was pulled out of the ditch.
