Classes for the fall semester at Flint Hills Technical College began Monday and so far it’s been business as usual.
Typically a busy time of year, the parking lots were full of students and officials were busy helping those students with last-minute financial aid and course offering questions. On KVOE’s Tech Talk Tuesday morning, Vice President of Student Services and Financial Aid Director Lisa Kirmer said it’s been an exciting start to the new year.
That help, Kirmer says from her office, extends through a variety of avenues beyond just the first week of classes.
Students are seeing a few new changes to course offerings this semester. Those include a food sciences component in the culinary arts program, changes to business curriculum, including some articulation agreements in the works with Emporia State. The fabrication component for the welding program is also being offered following a new addition to that building. As for official enrollment numbers, those won’t be known until later in the semester but Kirmer remains optimistic.
Last year, FHTC reported a 13 percent increase in fall enrollment versus the previous year with more than 1,100 students taking classes. FHTC has averaged a 95 to 98 percent placement rate of students in careers or further education training for the past several years.
