Local veterans were honored Sunday with a good old-fashioned American barbecue.
American Legion Post 5 was the venue for the inaugural All Veteran’s Picnic which was organized by multiple organizations including the American Legion, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars post-1980 and the Student Veteran’s Association. The purpose of the picnic is to introduce younger veterans to these organizations and the services available to help them adjust to life after service.
Event organizer and VFW Commander Michael White says a major factor behind the event is the camaraderie shared amongst veterans of all ages.
Along with food donated by local companies and residents, were an assortment activities including face painting from the Emporia Arts Van, bounce houses, and lawn games. White says after the success of the inaugural event, he’s already looking forward to doing it again.
If you are a veteran and were unable to attend the picnic but would still like information on services offered by local organizations contact VFW Post 1980 at 620-342-9864, the American Legion at 620-342-1119 or the Student Veterans Association by calling Emporia State University at 620-341-1200.
