Smoking materials were the likely cause of a small fire in west Emporia on Sunday, while a wayward animal sparked a second fire later in the day.
Firefighters were dispatched to 312 Wilson shortly after noon for a reported grass fire under a house. EFD Capt. Bill Harmon says unspecified smoking materials caught some leaves on fire under the house porch. The bottom of the porch caught fire as a result, but the fire did not spread much further before it was put out.
No injuries were reported. Resident information has not been released.
Around 2:30 pm, fire developed near the Simmons Pet Food complex in the 1300 block of East Logan Avenue. EFD Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says a squirrel got into some electric lines nearby, falling to the ground and sparking a small patch of grass.
No injuries were reported.
