AMERICUS — The Americus Fire Department should have some new equipment on hand soon, thanks to the success of recent grant applications.
Fire Chief Bill Harmon says two years of fundraising for a specialized ATV is now paying off. MFA Oil recently granted $2,000 towards the purchase.
Harmon says the grant should go a long ways towards finalizing the ATV purchase, and it links to a $2,000 Frontier Farm Credit grant for the ATV as well.
Frontier Farm Credit is helping the department in another way, granting $5,000 towards specialized grain entrapment rescue equipment and classwork.
In the meantime, behind-the-scenes work continues to bring Americus a new fire station after the city and Americus Township were combined for the purposes of a new fire district in March. Harmon says budgets and bylaws are being compiled for the new fire district. Once that’s done, the district can move towards building a new fire station — although Harmon says it may be next year before a new building may be up.
