It has been hot and dry for several weeks. Now the fire danger is up as winds pick up speed.
Emporia Fire Capt. Ryan Conley says folks need to be cautious.
Conley’s warning came shortly before a grass fire developed in the 2800 block of Road X around 2:15 pm, prompting a response from Allen-Admire, Miller and Reading fire crews. Further details are pending.
Winds will be as high as 30 mph Friday. Winds could be as high as 25 mph through the weekend as well.
Besides controlled burns or trash burns, Conley also urges residents to be careful with anything fire-related. As a case in point, fire developed in a hay grinder near Allen a week ago. That fire destroyed the equipment, some nearby hay and a barn at 2i Feeders.
Fire danger is typically something we talk about during the late winter to early spring months with the traditional grass fire season. However, severe to exceptional drought covers most of the KVOE listening area, with the worst of it on top of northwest Lyon, east Morris and west Wabaunsee counties.
