The Emporia Animal Shelter reports their kennels remain full since last week.
It was reported last Monday the shelter was experiencing overcrowding when it came to the housing of animals. It appears nothing has changed since then as space continues to be an issue, causing staff to downsize the living space for the animals in their care.
Peggy Derrick, Animal Shelter manager, says they are in need of volunteers to help take care of the ever-growing animal population.
A common occurrence seen in animal shelters across the nation is an influx of larger dogs, specifically pit bull mixes, which crowd the system. Derrick adds with adoption numbers already low, and many not wanting to adopt “bully breeds” space becomes limited and animals have to live in more confined kennels.
Derrick says there is a desperate need for pet adoptions, and the process is very simple.
Those wishing to adopt may contact the Emporia Animal Shelter at 620-340-6345 or visit them at 1216 Hatcher Street in Emporia. Hours of operation are 11 am to 3 pm Saturday through Wednesday.
