The former director of the Emporia Senior Center made her first appearance in Lyon County District Court Tuesday since her arrest two weeks ago on a charge of theft exceeding $100,000.
Lannie Lyman appeared without counsel during the hearing and requested a court-appointed attorney. That request that was denied by Judge Douglas Jones who scheduled a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Aug. 23. Prior to that, Lyman will also have an attorney review hearing at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 9. She remains free on a $10,000 bond.
Lyman is accused of theft exceeding $100,000 from the Senior Center from early 2016 through September 2017, when she was fired. An outside audit showed more than $110,000 was taken from the Senior Center from the time she was hired in 2014 to 2017. According to Judge Jones, the charge is a level 5 nonperson felony that carries a maximum sentence of 136 months in prison.
Court affidavits provided to KVOE News say Lyman allegedly wrote bonus checks for more than what the Senior Center board approved and altered Quickbooks records.
The Senior Center serves over 2,000 seniors each year. Bingo nights draw better than 100 people per week to the facility.
