An Emporia man accused of using a machete during a domestic altercation last week made his first court appearance Monday afternoon.
Cory Coburn, 35, faces seven total counts, including felony counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, criminal threat and possession of methamphetamine. Judge Douglas Jones appointed Paul Dean to provide counsel to Coburn.
Coburn remains jailed and will appear for a preliminary hearing at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20.
Coburn was arrested July 24 after allegedly punching a female victim in the chest and pulling a machete on her at their home in east Emporia. According to an arrest affidavit, Coburn also allegedly threatened to burn the house down and had allegedly made threats against the woman previously.
Coburn was arrested at Newman Regional Health after the altercation and his arrest prompted the hospital also to make emergency updates to its security measures after Coburn brought a backpack containing the machete with him to the emergency room.
