Formal charges have been filed against an Emporia man arrested earlier this week following a domestic altercation in east Emporia.
Cory Coburn, 35, faces numerous felony charges including aggravated domestic battery, aggravated assault, criminal damage to property and possession of methamphetamine. His first court appearance is at 12:45 p.m. on Monday.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KVOE News, Coburn allegedly punched a female victim in the chest, head-butted her and pulled a machete on her threatening to kill her and set the house on fire. The woman said it was not the first time Coburn had been violent towards her. She alleges Coburn strangled her during a verbal altercation July 19 and was threatened with a broomstick on about July 21.
Coburn told authorities the woman allegedly came at him with the knife and he head-butted her to get it away. Coburn took himself to Newman Regional Health where he was treated and then arrested. Authorities confiscated a machete, two hypodermic needles, a spoon wrapped in a plastic baggie, and methamphetamine inside Coburn’s backpack.
The incident also prompted Newman Regional Health to implement additional security measures this week, including two-guard coverage day or night and the automatic “wanding” of patients as they come in for care as well as the right to search patients if they have suspicious packages.
