Libertarian Jeff Caldwell came to Emporia on Monday to detail why voters should choose him in the race for governor this fall.
Caldwell tells KVOE News he has been part of the Libertarian party at the state level the past eight years. His overall plan is to make sure the state listens to its people and to end what he calls a corrupt path of government.
Caldwell says he would work to reduce the state tax on gasoline, cut taxes for ag producers and others working to conserve the Ogallala Aquifer, push constitutional amendments to prevent unfair property valuations and allow for statewide ballot initiatives and end Daylight Saving Time.
Caldwell’s campaign may be best known for supporting the legalization of cannabis to fund public education.
Caldwell also talked about his goal of seeing the Second Amendment Protection Act enforced so people deciding to use medical cannabis cultivated in Kansas could retain their right to keep or purchase guns.
Being the party’s only candidate, he can slide past the Aug. 7 primary without having to separate himself from the packs that have developed on the Republican and Democrat sides. He says being a third-party candidate can give him an advantage because he can work towards eliminating the bad aspects of government both major parties don’t like and then work towards supporting policies agreeable to the other parties.
