This week’s meeting of the USD 251 North Lyon County School Board will be the first one under new interim superintendent Mike Mathes who succeeds Aron Dody in that capacity.
Mathes, who recently retired from leading the Topeka Seaman district for better than 20 years says he’s aware of the challenges facing him in the new position. Most notably has been several failed attempts to build new facilities for the district and declining enrollment numbers.
Dody resigned earlier this year to become the superintendent at Council Grove. Dody’s tenure followed years of turmoil in the district including three contentious bond votes that ultimately failed to help improve facilities. Most recently also the district saw the closure of Reading Elementary as part of a cost savings measure for the district. Mathes says he’s determined to make sure students receive a quality education.
The USD 251 board meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the board meeting room in Americus.
