Independence Day is a good reminder of the freedoms afforded to Americans by the Constitution. One of those is the right to vote.
With the Aug. 7 primary now just slightly over a month away, the time is now to get registered to vote if you haven’t done so already. Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat was on the KVOE Newsmaker program Monday and says there are several options when it comes to registration, but says it must be done by July 17.
Mail ballots can be requested beginning July 18 and advance voting begins July 23. Vopat says new machines will greet voters this year which will have added security features. She explains how the process will work for voters.
Voters must present the last four numbers of their social security number or their Kansas driver’s license in order to register.
Emporia voters will decide on the Aug. 7 ballot whether or not to approve Sunday alcohol sales at retail businesses. Also to be decided will be narrowing the crowded field for the Republican and Democratic candidates for Kansas governor.
