Kansas Gas Service has requested permission to increase its net base rates for customers.
The request is now with the Kansas Corporation Commission. Kansas Gas is asking for an overall increase of nearly $43 million, which translates to a nearly $6 monthly increase for residential customers.
Spokesperson Dawn Tripp says Kansas Gas is requesting the increase to cover costs after making almost $180 million worth of investments to its gas distribution system in Kansas since the last rate adjustment 18 months ago. That system covers around 13,000 miles and serves over 630,000 residents.
Kansas Gas is already “recovering” nearly $3 million from customers through the Gas System Reliability Surcharge. This request affects gas service, not the actual cost of gas listed on monthly statements. Gas costs, according to Kansas Gas, are passed through directly to consumers with no markup.
The Kansas Corporation Commission now has 240 days to review the filing.
