More people will be on the lakes this weekend, especially with the 4th of July coming up next week. As a result, law enforcement officers and state officials are ramping up efforts to stop intoxicated boaters.
Operation Dry Water is a national campaign sponsored by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators to increase the awareness of the dangers of drinking on the water. Major Dan Hesket with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism joined KVOE’s morning show this week to talk about what they’ll be looking out for.
Extra officers may be out on some of the state’s bodies of water with extra boats in order to deter intoxicated vessel operators. Major Hesket explains what the law entails when drinking on a boat.
Obviously, the bad effect is that if there is an accident, the risk for drowning is increased both for the operator and for guests on the boat.
Operation Dry Water is in effect through the weekend.
