The American Legion Post 5 Seniors and Juniors were both in action last night.
Post 5 AAA claimed back to back blowout wins over Chase County 19-0 and 13-6.
In game one Post 5 jumped out to an early commanding lead scoring twelve runs in the first. Emporia would add seven more runs through the third fourth and fifth innings to close out Ottawa in six. John Miller led Emporia with three hits in four at bats and four RBI. Skyler Beaty got the win on the mound giving up one hit with six strikeouts in three innings.
Game two saw Chase County put up more of a fight but with the same result as Emporia would claim their second win 13-6.
Emporia opened the scoring yet again with a single run in the second as Jace Stewart would score off a wild pitch. Chase County would match Emporia run for run throughout the early innings but three runs in the third and five in the fourth would allow Emporia to pull away and close out the game. Beau Baumgardner led Emporia at the plate in game two scoring three runs off three hits in four at-bats.
Coach Matt Baumwart says his team’s defense is top notch because everyone has experience in multiple positions.
The Post 5 A team did not fare as well in their doubleheader with the Topeka Senators dropping both games by scores of 4-1 and 10-8.
The Senators would control the action in game one scoring two in the first and giving up just one run to Post 5 in the fourth. Starting pitcher Hunter Redeker lasted just three innings giving up two runs off five hits with two errors as post 5 will fall in game one 4-1.
In game two Topeka would lead 10-5 going into the seventh inning. Post 5 would attempt a comeback thanks to a Tanner Brooks double which saw Evan Berges and John Pringle score to bring Emporia within three. Tanner Brooks added a run off a balk to make it a two run game, but the Topeka bullpen would stop the momentum striking out Carter Garza to sweep the double header.
Coach Anthony Markowitz says despite the losses he saw a lot of maturity out of his players.
The Post 5 Juniors now get set for the Summer Slam Tournament which begins Friday in Emporia.
