It was a day to be remembered Sunday morning as Matt Whitlock would be the last competitor standing to claim the inaugural U.S. Amateur Match Play Championship at Peter Pan Park.
Whitlock advanced to the finals with victories over Kyle Reid of Canada, Billy Crane of New Hampshire and Chris Hall of Minnesota in day one. On day two he would defeat Germaine Barksdale of Georgia in the quarterfinals and Cole Neal of Mississippi in the semis. In the finals, Whitlock would defeat Jake Dills of Oregon with a score of 2 and 1.
On the final hole, Whitlock found himself in early trouble while trying to close out the match.
Whitlock says he is overjoyed that he will forever be known as the first to win the Amateur Match Play Championship.
The competition featured 52 competitors from across the U.S. and Canada.
As champion Whitlock received the grand prize of 18 veteran baskets, 18 tee signs, a $2,000 store credit and 20 years of free discs from Dynamic Discs.
