Residents are encouraged to spend part of their Sunday at Soden’s Grove this weekend.
The Emporia Friends of the Zoo annual Open House runs from 11 am to 2 pm at the David Traylor Zoo. Director Lisa Keith says EFOZ has been a blessing for the zoo.
Activities include games and educational activities. This is also the one time during the year where the zoo opens up its off-exhibit area to the public.
KVOE will broadcast live from the open house Sunday.
Also, Tour de Lyon County gets rolling at 7 am, featuring a 106-mile ride to the county’s incorporated communities and a 20-mile, fun ride later in the morning. Undersheriff John Koelsch says the longer tour is unique for several reasons.
The tour starts at 7 am, with the fun ride beginning at 8 am. Registrations are online at www.bikereg.com and people can register on site as well.
The bike rides funnel into the annual Family Fun Day at the Grove from 11 am to 3 pm, including face painting, a bounce house and the Sertoma Club miniature train.
All proceeds from Tour de Lyon County are split between the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and local Special Olympics efforts. Team Schnak founder Kent Schnakenberg says this is a great partnership.
Fundraising is already off to a good start, thanks to Evora Wheeler, who donated a pan of her cinnamon rolls and pie for the cause. That has raised over $500 through an online auction on KVOE.com, with $270 for the pie and $250 for the cinnamon rolls.
