Argentina is in desperate need of a win now in the world cup after a devastating upset loss to Croatia Thursday.
Croatia would dominate Argentina in their 3-0 shutout win where Lionel Messi was little more than a spectator. the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, as the top European footballer, would have just 20 touches on the ball in the first half. Messi has yet to score in this year’s World Cup after being awarded the Golden Ball in 2014 as the tournament MVP.
With the loss, Argentina, the 2014 world cup runner-up, are mathematically unable to win their group and without a win against Nigeria Tuesday will miss out on the round of 16.
The upset follows a popular trend of favored teams suffering upset losses. In the opening round, Mexico defeated defending champions Germany 1-0 and Japan upset Colombia 2-1.
