Tuition and fees are going up at Emporia State University in the fall.
On Wednesday, the Kansas Board of Regents approved a 2.5 percent tuition rate increase across the board, which affects residents, nonresidents, undergraduate and graduate students. The board also approved student fee increases ranging from 1.6 to 2.4 percent.
That means a resident full-time undergraduate student will pay $3,379.08 per semester on tuition and fees, a jump of just under $75. A resident full-time graduate student will pay $4,186.68 per semester, an increase of just under $68. ESU President Allison Garrett says the tuition increase was designed to cover increased costs that the university incurs and has no control over.
Garrett points to universities having fewer state funds over the past decade to cover the rising expenses.
Garrett says ESU and other higher education institutions will continue to lobby lawmakers for additional state funding.
Non-resident undergraduate students will pay an extra $246 per semester on tuition and fees while non-resident graduate students will pay an extra $230 in tuition and fees.
The Board of Regents concludes its meetings on Thursday.
