Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer on Tuesday announced the denial of 21 pardon applications from convicted criminals seeking clemency, including two applications from Lyon County.
The cases that were denied pardon involved multiple murders, rapes, child sex crimes and drug crimes. In Lyon County, Gov. Colyer denied the pardons of Wallace Dixon III and Ashley Hopper. Dixon was one of two men found guilty in the death of Dana Hudson and her infant son in a 2001 explosion and fire at Eastgate Plaza Apartments. Hopper is a convicted felon from Topeka who was convicted of distributing opiates, opium, narcotics, or stimulants from a 2013 incident in Lyon County.
Kara Fullmer, the governor’s press secretary tells KVOE News that Dixon was seeking a pardon/sentence reduction on charges from 2006 including multiple counts of felony murder, burglary and aggravated battery. Hopper was seeking a pardon from a 2016 charge of distribution/possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Only nine pardons have been granted by Kansas governors, of both political parties, over the last 25 years.
