Petitions are still circulating to keep Emporia’s Sunday liquor sales policy as is.
In April, Emporia city commissioners approved a change to allow Sunday sales except on holidays at liquor stores, convenience stores and grocery stores. City policy for petitioners is five percent of city residents who voted in the last presidential election would have to offer valid signatures for the petition to go on the August ballot — in this case, almost 415 valid signatures would be needed to put this issue before voters.
Several years ago, city residents turned down Sunday sales when the issue was brought up, but other nearby towns, including Americus, Lebo and Olpe approved Sunday sales. Liquor store owners locally have been largely against adding Sunday hours, while convenience store and grocery store owners have generally supported the move.
If no petition is ultimately filed by Friday, the new policy would take effect Saturday at retail stores in Emporia’s city limits.
