With blood shortages continuing across the nation the American Red Cross is launching a new campaign to recruit new donors.
The new, “Missing Types” campaign is designed to illustrate the impacts of decreased A, B and O type blood donations from hospital shelves. During the campaign, the letters A, B and O will disappear from brands, social media pages, websites and signs to illustrate the impacts of dwindling blood donation numbers.
Jan Hale, Communications Manager for the American Red Cross, says the majority of their donors are both high school and college students. Once those students leave for the summer it causes a drastic decrease in available blood, which makes the recruitment of new donors all the more essential.
Hale says contrary to popular belief the number of injuries requiring blood transfusions does not exactly rise during the summer months. However; due to the dwindling numbers of blood available during the summer, injury accidents create a bigger impact on patient needs.
There are a number of upcoming donation opportunities in several counties between June 11 and July 3, they include
