Lyon County commissioners have vacated parts of Road A near the Morris County line.
Commissioners voted unanimously to vacate part of Road A between Roads 310 and 330 during their action meeting session Thursday. Commission Chair Rollie Martin says there’s no road to use.
Commissioner Dan Slater agrees.
Commissioner Scott Briggs says this follows years of discussion and debate among nearby landowners.
Slater says the Road A situation highlights concerns that developed in the 1960s after the county took over road maintenance from townships.
There was some discussion earlier this year of possible bridge work, but Briggs says that discussion would have involved the Kansas Water Office and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Briggs says there will is almost no chance the area will be turned into a road and then align that with the Lyon-Morris county line. The road meanders east into Lyon County for much of that stretch and only touches the county line in a couple spots. Any possibility of road improvements would have to start with landowners, at which time Lyon and Morris counties would start talks on new adjustments. Meanwhile, Martin says a new “access point” might be created for nearby landowners, although that will be discussed at another time.
The disagreements among the landowners along that stretch makes for a different situation than another road vacation approved by county commissioners Thursday. Commissioners approved the vacation of 500 feet of A-8 north of Road 155 after neither landowner nearby opposed that step.
