Plans are roughed out for a new veterans memorial in Olpe.
Organizers Gary Murphy and Jerry Haag spoke at length with KVOE News recently about the project. Murphy says the tentative plan is to erect the memorial in Olpe Jones Park.
Organizers say the plan is to honor all veterans with connections to south Lyon County. Haag says discussions have been underway for about a year.
People who want their names and service information inscribed will need to pay $100 before the stones are installed and $125 afterward.
Fundraising is underway. The Trusler Foundation has offered a $25,000 matching grant. Organizers hope to raise about $100,000 before breaking ground. There have also been several in-kind donations for the stones, dirt work and electrical work.
Murphy says construction can begin as soon as fundraising is completed.
An account is set up at Olpe State Bank. To donate, call the bank at 620-475-3213 or mail checks to 202 Westphalia in Olpe, ZIP 66865. Put Olpe Veterans Memorial in the memo line if you mail a check.
