Severe thunderstorm warnings now impact part of the KVOE listening area.
Active warnings include:
*Lyon, Osage, north Coffey counties until 1:45 am.
Severe weather reports are currently pending.
A severe thunderstorm watch now affects Lyon and all surrounding counties until 1 am Tuesday.
10 pm Monday
A severe thunderstorm watch affecting the KVOE listening area north of Emporia now impacts most of our coverage area.
The Storm Prediction Center has expanded an existing severe thunderstorm watch to include Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 1 am Tuesday. The original watch included Morris and Wabaunsee counties.
Separately, a severe thunderstorm watch affects Chase County until 11 pm.
As has been the case north of the area Monday evening, hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind as high as 70 mph are the main risks. Brief heavy rain is also possible.
8 pm Monday
Portions of the KVOE listening area are now under a severe thunderstorm watch until early Tuesday.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 am for Morris and Wabaunsee counties. Hail to the size of limes, or 2 inches in diameter, and wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible as storms move southeast towards the area. Isolated tornadoes are possible but unlikely.

5 pm Monday
A cold front is expected to move into the area by Monday evening and with it, will bring to the area strong to severe storms.
The cold front should be to Emporia by 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. TV-13 Meteorologist Jeremy Goodwin believes by the time it reaches the Emporia area, the main risk will be strong straight-line winds and up to quarter-sized hail.
Storms will trek across the listening area from northwest to southeast. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph. In addition, severe weather chances are also possible Tuesday night into Wednesday night.
Noon Monday
Chances of storms have increased for Monday evening. So have the chances for severe weather.
Lyon and all surrounding counties are now under an enhanced risk of severe weather starting early Monday evening and continuing into early Tuesday morning. As of the Storm Prediction Center’s 12:30 am update Monday, the area was under a slight risk of severe weather. By 7:30 am, areas west of the Kansas Turnpike had been upgraded to an enhanced risk.
Hail up to the size of golf balls and winds as high as 70 mph are still the main concerns areawide. Storms could approach the area shortly before sunset.

7:30 am Monday
We’ll start the week with a low-end risk of strong to severe thunderstorms across the Flint Hills.
Officially, we have an enhanced risk of severe weather along and west of the Kansas Turnpike as well as a slight risk of severe storms east of the Turnpike on Monday. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says the main concerns are hail up to the size of golf balls, winds as high as 70 mph and lightning.
There is a marginal risk of severe weather across the area Tuesday, again for hail and high winds. Storms are also possible Wednesday.
Meanwhile, temperatures will be above normal all week. High temperatures climb to the mid-90s Monday. Highs should be in the upper 80s for Tuesday and Wednesday, but they could well climb back to the mid-90s by Thursday and stay above 90 degrees through the upcoming weekend.
