An Emporia Public Schools Administrator was honored by USA-Kansas last week for their outstanding service in education.
USA-Kansas was developed in 1971 as an umbrella association designed to support the work of all member associations and the school and district-wide leaders who make up the membership. Starting in 1985 USA-Kansas began awarding the Outstanding Service Award which recognizes one member who has provided exceptional contributions to the profession and their organization. This year’s recipient was Emporia’s Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Dr. George Abel.
Dr. Abel began his teaching career in Emporia before moving to Eudora where he worked for a number of years. Abel returned to Emporia in 1993 and started his administrative career as the Director of Education.
Abel has been a USA-Kansas member for the last 25 years and is the patriarch for the Kansas Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (KASCD). Before moving into administration Dr. Abel taught science and served as a school counsellor. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Abel could be found coaching football and wrestling. Dr. Abel will be retiring in the next few weeks after 45 years in education.
