Damage estimates are still pending, but the cause of Wednesday’s fire at an Emporia restaurant appears to have been an accident.
Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford says a cooking appliance was the cause of the blaze that developed at Restaurante Las Brisas, 312 West South, just before 11 am. Bradford says oil was being warmed up and eventually was left unattended.
The fire caused heavy smoke damage through the restaurant right around lunchtime. The extent of the fire damage is currently undetermined, although fire crews on site say the fire got into the walls and the attic before it was put out.
There were no injuries.
