Overwhelmed is the word Quilts of Gratitude spokesperson Rosaetta Fields used several times to describe her emotions as the winner of the featured quilt was announced and the final fundraising total was revealed.
Area residents donated $3,358 to the cause. Fields said she was blown away by the support.
KVOE, Waters True Value and Bruffs Sports Bar and Grill donated $600 to get the process started after Fields said quilters associated with the event pay all their costs out of pocket with no reimbursement. Printing Plus, meanwhile, printed the tickets for the fundraiser. Waters manager Mark Shook says he was grateful for the chance to be involved.
Glenna Nymeyer won the “Thank You Troops” quilt, which featured a 3-by-4 pattern of blue blocks on a white or cream background and separated by diagonal red-and-white strips on the front. The back features a fireworks-style red-and-blue pattern with a motif of a soldier and the words “Founding City of Veterans Day.”
Local quilters put better than 200 hours into the covering. Proceeds will help to pay for batting, or fill material, and backing for future quilts.
