HARVEYVILLE — Wabaunsee County deputies have arrested two people, including one with outstanding Lyon County warrants, after a lengthy standoff north-northwest of Harveyville on Memorial Day.
Sheriff Rob Hoskins says deputies were alerted to Justin Atwood’s presence at 12346 Gookins Road, about five miles north of Harveyville in rural Wabaunsee County. When deputies arrived around 2:30 pm, it was determined more than one person was inside the house. Deputies promptly asked for help from the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Emergency Services Unity.
Hoskins says people inside did not respond to any communication attempts as negotiations continued, so authorities secured a search warrant for the property. Eventually, two people were arrested: Justin Atwood, age 24 from Topeka, and Kelsey Nicholle Kaberline, also 24 of Topeka.
Hoskins says Atwood was arrested in connection to:
*A Lyon County warrant for failure to comply after original charges of possession of stolen property, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and being a habitual violator.
*A Wabaunsee County warrant for failure to appear following original charges of four counts of burglary.
Kaberline, meanwhile, was arrested in connection to:
*Two Shawnee County warrants for probation violations.
*One Shawnee County warrant for suspected distribution of heroin or stimulants, flee and elude, possession of drug paraphernalia, no liability insurance and defective headlamps on a motor vehicle.
*One Shawnee County warrant for suspected distribution of heroin or stimulants and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Court dates are pending.
Hoskins credited the cooperation between Wabaunsee County deputies, the Highway Patrol, AMR, Harveyville Fire and other agencies during this incident.
