TOPEKA — Highways and byways will be thick with travelers this holiday weekend.
Kansas AAA spokesperson Jennifer Haugh is anticipating a 12-year high for travelers going at least 50 miles to their destination.
Travel will be up despite higher gas prices, not only locally but across Kansas and the country. Gas prices typically go up leading into the summer months, but worldwide “geopolitical pressures,” including recent sanctions on Iran and OPEC’s decision to reduce output, are also pushing prices.
Currently, Emporia’s gas prices range from $2.69 to $2.75 for regular unleaded. Gas prices statewide are between 50 and 60 cents higher than they were a year ago.
