NEOSHO RAPIDS — While the Lyon County Elections Office gears up for the August primary, Neosho Rapids is looking ahead to the November general election.
Earlier this month, the town’s City Council approved a special election for a one-percent sales tax. City Treasurer Linda Crawford says this would renew the existing tax before it goes off the books at the end of the year.
Crawford says money will be dedicated to funding new asphalt and millings for city streets. It could also provide for new gravel and to clear out street gutters.
In Emporia, petitions are being circulated to put a Sunday liquor sales question on the August ballot. Around 450 signatures would be needed by June 22 to do so. Otherwise, liquor stores, grocery stores and convenience stores in town have the option of selling alcohol between noon and 8 pm Sundays except for holidays.
