Overflow at the Salvation Army food pantry means good news for the people it serves — and that likely will be the case when all the donations from Emporia’s 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger are sorted.
Going into the event, the Salvation Army said it was short of everything inside its food pantry. That won’t be the case now, according to Capt. Deb Thompson.
Salvation Army Emergency Services Coordinator Suzanne Worthen-Miller says these donations can keep the pantry full for three to four months, and they help in another big way.
Letter carrier Janet Way says she noticed a lot of blue donation bags were full as postal carriers picked up the food and personal hygiene items Saturday. She thanked her compatriots for getting ready for the event over the past week.
She also thanked the Salvation Army volunteers for their efforts.
The weekend totals are 19,000 pounds. Final totals should be announced by late this week, allowing for residents who couldn’t donate Saturday to help the drive Monday or Tuesday.
