Emporia’s 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger is coming this weekend, and it couldn’t come at a much better time for the Salvation Army food pantry.
On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia this week, Salvation Army Capt. Deb Thompson said the pantry’s supplies are disappearing quickly.
The Salvation Army is also requesting personal hygiene items like razors and individual-sized items like toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner.
Emporia letter carriers have been the driving force behind this foodraiser throughout its history. Letter carrier Janet Way says carriers are ready for the extra load.
Also on the program, United Way Director Jami Reever said local residents are becoming more and more aware of the impact hunger can have on a person and a family.
Emporia Postmaster Harry Gifford encouraged people to get donations either to mailboxes, front doors or curbs by Friday evening or early Saturday. He also encouraged people to keep glass at home because those containers could break in transit. Way, meanwhile, encouraged people to resist the temptation to donate expired food because that cannot be used by the Salvation Army.
If, by chance, you can’t participate Saturday, Way says you can also leave food donations Monday or Tuesday next week. For more information, call the Salvation Army at 342-3093.
