TOPEKA — While Kansas Governor Jeff Colyer has signed an adjustment to a better than half-billion-dollar education funding plan, attorneys for schools say the state’s plan is still woefully inadequate.
Lawmakers passed the plan last month before going on their traditional three-week recess, only to find out there was a roughly $80 million miscalculation. They passed a fix before adjourning the session last week.
Both sides in the ongoing education funding debate filed paperwork before a Kansas Supreme Court deadline. Attorney General Derek Schmidt believes the new funding package should end court concerns about adequate funding. However, attorneys for school districts in the Gannon v. Kansas lawsuit say another $1 billion plus inflation increases should be added on top of what lawmakers approved earlier this session.
The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments May 22.
