The David Traylor Zoo held a party Sunday to celebrate the beauty of nature.
Party for the Planet, the zoo’s Earth Day celebration, gave families and children an opportunity to get closer to nature. Along with learning about the characteristics of bees and proper gardening, children could also participate in crafts projects making pine cone bird feeders and bottle cap magnets.
Michelle Sagers, the education coordinator for the zoo, says these activities are forms of nature play. Sagers took a few minutes to speak with KVOE and explain exactly what nature play is all about.
Sagers says she truly enjoys seeing families come to the zoo events learning about nature together. She explains that when parents and children share experiences, much like playing catch when growing up, it is likely to carry on throughout children’s lives.
Along with the crafts and educational activities Sunday, children were also able to take the plastic reduction pledge.
